52 8n will not start

good mornin. I have got my dad"s 1952 8n , he passed in 89" tractors been in barn until last year, I have replaced, rebuilt, and got it all back together again, will not fire off until I use starter fluid, will not continue to run unless I keep the strtr fluid on it, it is a rebuilt carb, it has been removed and is getting gas but this up-draft thing has got me baffled, Any ideas, advice, help?!, Thanks

Might be miserably low compression from setting 19 ys.

pull the plugs and add some atf to each cyl.. threa dthe plugs in.. come back after 2 days.. remove plugs.. rotate engine a bit.. add more atf.. do same after 2 more days... then after that. remove plugs.. roll engine over and expell the oil, and then see what ya get.

If it still won't run without starter fluid.. check fuel delivery again.. In any case.. a dry/wet comp check will be a good first palce to start after oiling the rings.. etc.

check under the big nozzel for a plugged main jet. Same thing happened to me. once I got main jet I didn't see at first out and cleaned the crud that had plugged it, It was able to run without keeping the starting fluid to it. trgWY

I'd suspect you still have some old gas in the tank. I'd drain what ever is in there and put in some fresh gas. I'd also check all three screens in the fuel system before putting in the new gas...Good luck

Up, down or sideways...doesn't matter much...just pressure/vacuum in all of them.
Since ALL fuel (for power & idle) in those carbs must pass thru the Main Jet, I would certainly look there.

First off how much sucktion does it have at the air intake of the carb. Hold you hand over it and hit the starter button. If you have very little it probably has stuck rings so you need to put about !/2 cup of ATF in each cylinder. Also when you hold your hand over it like that your hand should get covered with gas and it may even try to start but I would say your biggest problem is stuck rings from sitting so many years and the ATF will help that problem big time BTDT on many tractors

I bought a forklift a few years ago that had the motor rebuilt then sat for years.The carb was not on it,I found it in a box in the shed the forklift was in.The guy that rebuilt it had died,so I had nobody to answer any questions.I took the carb apart and didnt see anything so I put it on the motor after I cleanded it a little with spray carb cleaner.Cranked and cranked,would try and start,but wouldnt start with starting fluid,so I soaked a rag with gas and held it over the intake of the carb and it would run until it sucked all the gas out of the rag.I dont know what it was that was wrong with that carb,but I know I couldnt find a repair kit for it anywhere.I took it apart again and soaked it in carb cleaner about 24 hours,then blew it out with compressed air and put it back together.Really did not see anything wrong with it,but after that it fired right up.Something in there was plugged up and it wouldnt run because of it and it had to dissolve when I soaked it,might be your problem too.Another time on something like that it was the carb gasket was broke on the back side and it was sucking air and wouldnt run very good and real hard to get started.Looked for a good while before I found that.Ive seen intake bolts be loose on lots of motors lots of times cause all kinds of missing,not starting problems.The pickup I drive now the first thing I did when I got it home was tighten up the intake bolts on 350 Chevy and lots of them were loose and somebody just put a head gasket on it.

Thank you, I have an old 83 ford 300 6 that is the same way. I will take this carb off the old 8n and soak it and see if that will work. Thank you again for the in-put.
