52 Chev starting

Have a 52 1&1/2 Ton with later 235 engine on 12 Volt. When I start the engine it dosen't seem to fire until I let off the starter. Is it possible the starter is taking the fire from the ignition? When I take my foot off the starter and the enging is still spinning it will start.

Phlash, the exact same thing happened to me with a IH 340 tractor, the starter was pulling the voltage from the ignition.Ive read disscusion on this before and I think you can use a voltage meter at the starter to determine the problem. If you dont get a answer here post this on the IH disscusion board

Test the plus side of the coil for voltage during cranking. I would bet there is nothing there. If not, something is wired incorrectly.
