52 side mount alternator

I am having a bit of problem with my alternator charging and was need some pointers. 52 sidemount 12v system one wire alternator, but I am having to rev the tractor past full throttle by hand with the govenor and I dont like doing that, afraid I am going to hurt the motor. I have seen at one time or another a wiring scheme that will help "excite" the alternator sooner or do i need to look at changing out the pulley? not sure of pulley size at the moment.

if it is a 10/12SI gm type alternator there will be a plug on the housing.. may have a rubber cap on it. has 2 male spades in it. marked 1 and 2

loop 2 over to the charge stud.

start tractor, set to mid throttle.

jump a wire from 1 over to the charge stud. if alt starts charging, then you can excite it usinc a couple different methods.

1, install a small push button switch like a horn switch to excite it. or idiot lamp it using a 194 bulb inline from key switch to #1. key on = lamp on, after start and rpms up lamp should go out and alt charge.

can also use a diode between key switch and 1

1a/50piv minimum.. 3a/200piv preferred. 1n5408 is a good diode number. from radio shack you can use the following: 276-1661, 276-1141

diodes have a stripe on them.. put stripe towards alternator.

not all alt vreg mods will work like this.

so post back results.

Yep that is the common problem with the 1 wire set up and why I NEVER use them. On some you can do as sound says to do and on others it will not work. Try it and if that does not work buy a 3 wire and hook it up and it will charge from the get go

Sashby........that is a very common problem with 1-wire alternator conversions. Ya gotta rev yer cold engine to over 1800-rpms. Since most tractor engine operation is seldom over 2/3-throttle, (1500-rpms) yer 1-wire genny nebber gitts turned on. Once turned on will charge at near idle speed of 600-rpms.

1-wire alternator conversions are very popular with automotive engine enthusiasts 'cuz ya gotta slip the clutch to gitt the engine pullin' the heavy car out on the highway. So ittza never a problem for them.

We recommend the Delco 3-wire alternator conversion with idiot lite. Unlike the 1-wire it starts and charges at near idle speed........Dell a 12V advocate for the right reasons, who knows 8-ways to convert to 12V and they all work the first time

I purchased a one wire alternator rebuild kit a few years ago on Ebay. It included a "low cut in" regulator. My 10si now excites and starts charging at just above an idle. All it requires to excite is a very small blip of the throttle, that is, if it doesn't charge immediately after starting the tractor!
This one wire works as well as the three wire alts I have had on other N's.

every 1 wire alt i've seen costs more $ than a 3 wire. for this reason alone.. though there are many more.. I've never seenthe need for a 1 wire on our tractor setups.. etc.

I agree, soundguy. The one wire I am currently using was installed by a previous owner. All the conversions I have done have been 3 wire 10si and I used a diode as you suggest. Cheap and reliable.

I have checked the alternator and you are correct, it has two spades under a cap but they are not marked. How do I check?

First off, I want to thank everybody that has placed a comment on any question I have every Posted. You guys have been very helpful in teaching me the way to work on my 52 8n sidemount. The trick to "excite" my one wire alternator works, and I am just finishing up the wires. The tip on the distributor bushing...worked. The tip on the govenor...worked. The tip on the spark...worked. If it had not have been for you all, I would have been in debt to a mechanic way over what I would have wanted to give. Hopefully in the future I can help someone as much as yall have helped me. Thank you does not say enough. GOD bless.
