5200 John Deere

Just ran across the 5200 John Deere with 1500 hours on it that has been stored inside most of it’s life. I don’t really know much about those and I’d appreciate any comments on good or bad before I decide to have a look.

A very plain & simple tractor. A little noisy and they have some vibration. Both are from the 3-cylinder engine. I think, but not sure, that both collar shift and synchronized shift were available. Synch shift much preferred. Handy little loader tractor but of course you will want a bunch of weight on the 3-point hitch and MFWD much preferred for loader work. They're usually quite reliable if taken care of. Don't ride the clutch. Check out the function of the 2-stage clutch before buying. Probably the main problem is that wear can cause slop to develop in the shift linkage and make them hard to shift. This can, of course, be repaired.

IMHO 5200 doesn't have a true dual stage clutch because the pto clutch has a separate clutch control mechanism other than traction clutch foot pedal. Early JD 5000 series utility are known for poor clutch reliability especially on tractors equipped with FEL. I agree engine/hyd's were noisy on these models.

Agree, it's sort of two clutches in one, like a dual stage, but foot linkages control power to ground, hand lever controls power to PTO, making it an independent PTO.

I kinda like them,, they are "WAY" better than the models that they replaced,, as for as the clutch,,if you keep them adjusted they last longer.
