53 ford charging issues

I have a 53 Jubilee that stopped charging. replaced the generator and then found the regulator was bad. Still nothing. Put the old gen back on and went into over charge. had to disconnect the battery to avoid melting wires. Hooked it back up and once again have no charge. I did put a 6V electronic ignition on it afew years ago and nfvfr had a problem until now. Anhy help is appreciated

would be WAY cheaper to diagnose the problem rather than start with the most expensive parts and randomly swapping them.

disconnect the vreg.

motor test the genny.. jump bat to field and arm.. belt off, if she spins, she should charge.

post back.

You should have just converted to to 12V before you spent any money on a blasted, decrepit 6V genny and VR. You'd have been done with the charging system forever.

parts changers get it wrong every time. When my 640 quit charging I took the cover off the regulator. With the engine running I closed the open cutout points with my finger, ammeter show a charge.Charging kept on when I took my finger off the points. This told me that the shunt coil on the cut out was open, that kept the points from closing.Once the regulator was on the bench an ohmmeter test prove the coil open.Thats the difference between part changers and skilled mechanics. My new regulator had to be adjusted to give a 5 amp reading.
