53 TO35 PTO problems

I have a 53 TO35 with pto problems. The shaft will spin but when you put and force on it, even if you grab it with your hand it will stop. Also The 3pt lefts really slow if at all. Any suggestions.

Thanks

Michael, I am not going to try to diaganose your tractors problems. I will let you know you do not have a 53 TO 35. The first year for the TO 35's was in 1955. If your serial number tag is on the dash you can find out what year it is by going to the left column of this page under Research and Info and clicking on "Serial Numbers". Someone more experienced will help to diagnose the problem. Good Luck Richard

Richard is correct, it is not a '53. First year of production for the TO5 was 54.

The front end of the PTO shaft is driven off the back end of the hydrauic pump shaft. Slow to lift, if at all, and no power to PTO could be symptoms of the same problem. I think that would suggest a clutch problem.

Are you having problems with power to drive wheels as well? If you are, you probably have the standard model with a single clutch and I would definitely suspect a clutch problem.

If you have a 'deluxe' model, it has a dual clutch. In this case you could have good power to the drive wheels, but have a PTO clutch that is slipping very badly. The 'deluxe' model also has a ground drive PTO position, which drives the PTO shaft off of the wheel drive and should deliver power to the PTO even if it does not work in the PTO position.

Does your tractor have two shift levers? If it only has one then it's not a TO-35.

Look at the serial number on the plate above the steering wheel column. It will be something like TO-ABCDEF, where A,B,C,etc are numbers. Numebre betwee TO-00001 and TO-60000are TO-20's and numbers between TO-60001 and TO-140000 are TO-30's. If your seria numbers are in those ranges, there is a lever above the foot rest on the left hand side that must be engaged to connect your pump and pto to the transmission. Make sure that lever is all the way back. If you have one of these tractors, the hydraulics and the pto do not work unless the clutch is engaged

DCA, the first 5 TO 35's built in 1954 was in order to get everything approved and figure out EXACTLY what is what and find out how to best put them together on the production line etc. Then the first production units were built for the 1955 model year. If you have one of the first 5 units it is probably a very pricey unit. I believe they went to museums and such. Richard

If it is a 1953 it wont be a TO35 and it would be a TO30. You can tell what it is quickly, how many gear change levers does it have, only one and it is a TO30. The problem you have is more than likely the PTO shaft is broken inside and not driving the pump, that is why it lifts slowly, it is just friction between th two broken parts that is turning it. That is what it looks like from the info you have given....if it is a TO35 it will have two gear levers and the problem will possibly be you have ripped the centre out of the PTO clutch plate. If you need the info on how to repair it, let me know what the tractor is and I can send you the information....John

Thanks for the replies. I started out with this problem 2 years ago and ended up restoring the front end first. Should of started where the problem was. At least now the engine runs great. When I get home I will recheck my TO-? and get the correct details and repost.

Thanks
Mike
