540 perkins Oliver?

Is it possible to do a mega swap into a tubbed 1750-1800 Oliver? Has anyone ever tried?

I thought about it since I have a 540 perkins that runs great, and uses no oil out of dads old 760 massey, but ran into a couple of issues in just the thinking about it stage. First issue is getting it to physically bolt to a 2 or 3 speed, because I couldn't find an sae adaptor plate like what the 354 perkins used. Next issue is size, it's less horse than a 3208 cat in a 2255, and in order to physically fit it in a tub, I think it would have to be a 2255 tub, so at that point of time, just use the 3208 that bolts straight in. If you value your time at all, it'll be cheaper. If it could fit in a 2050/2150 tub, you will have to lower the rpm's so much that you'll be out of the range it should be run if you are ever going to do any pto work.

I think you would be better off finding a Massey 2745 that already has the 540 V8 in it. They are pretty cheap HP just hard on the power shift components. The 540 has about 140HP where as the 1750-1800 tractors were 75-85 HP. The chain couplers are good for maybe 120HP. If you want to build a Frankenstein tractor to look at then go ahead but if you plan on working the tractor iI think you will have more break downs than you would want. The Cummins is the only reasonable option for repowering. There are enough of those out there that you can get great advice and pieces to do it. Sadly the 540 V8 isnt much good for anything once your combine wears out.

One engine i'm surprised doesn't get used more than it does(i've only seen a couple) is the 329 John Deere engine. They start great cold, decent torque, very reliable, and roughly about the same size as a 310. The best part is, they, or their same bolt pattern is used in many oem applications for generators, air compressors, etc,so it's easy to find the flywheel housing to bolt up to the 2 or 3 speed like the perkins had, that the cummins guys use.
