Had a 5400 two wheel drive tractor that came off a golf course. Bought a 5410 mfwd that had a dash fire from the insurance company. Didn"t burn any of the front part of the tractor, or even the engine except for a few hoses. Half a days time later I now have a 5400 mfwd. Really wasn"t much to it...although nobody around here has ever even heard of anybody doing it. Was just wondering if anyone else had ever changed one over. I have the 540 self leveling loader and frames off the 5410 also. I placed an ad for it in the classifieds, but not sure how many people actually read them. Anyway, the loader is for sale if anybody is interested.

The 5000 series was originally and initially designed so that a dealer could readily convert tractors from 2WD to MFWD or from MFWD to 2WD, as needed to keep inventory moving. Unfortunately, seldom did any dealers do that. Good that you discovered this "secret."

Wish I could remember for sure what was done about gear ratio between front and rear axles. I think there was only one ratio available but am not 100% sure, and getting the correct front wheel speed overrun, around 5%, was accomplished simply by matching front tire size to that on the rear. You might check literature for the 5400 and 5410 and make sure that your front tire size was one of those available from the factory with the rear tire size you have. Tractor attitude, nose-up/nose-down, was also a factor in the available tire sizes, but ratio and tire size control took care of that. The "golf course" comment and usual small rear tires used there got me to thinking!
