5410 Pros/Cons

Friend is going to go look at a 5410 with cab and MFWD, He will use it to for haying on about 15 acres. More or less something to keep him occupied. Any common problems on these or will it serve his needs? Little to new for me to know much about it. Thanks

I personally don"t like them, they are unhandy to get in and out of and uncomfortable to operate, and I change a lot of clutches in them, that is a weak point. They are a Zetor in disguise...

Zetor in disguise - well, not so much. No Zetor parts in them. You're probably thinking of another series of Deere branded, Zetor sourced, tractors sold in Mexico and some South American countries that the customers called "Water melon tractors" - green on the outside, red on the inside. The 5410's were designed at JD PEC in Waterloo, assembled in Augusta, GA. Engine is from JD plant in Mexico, transmission from Yanmar in Japan, rear axles from JD plant in Mannheim, Germany, hydraulic hitch rockshaft from Hema in Turkey, MFWD from Carraro in Italy. All components were made to JD specs. They do have dry clutches which must be used more carefully than hydraulic wet clutches. Those clutches won't tolerate one's foot riding the pedal nor a lot of clutch slipping by the operator.

Yes the clutches need to be kept in the correct amount of free travel, for sure, but the design is still not good...

Find out if it is a power reverser or a sync shuttle transmission. The clutch is wet on the power reverser. There are a lot of 5000 series tractors in our area, I personally own a 5510 open station. For haying 15 acres that tractor could be a good canditate. Make sure that it has the 3rd set of remotes on the back. My main gripe on the 5010 series tractors is that the loader joystick utilizes the two sets of rear hydraulics. I have the third set but still have to unplug the curl side to run my batwing cutter. The cabs are definatly small and are not my favorite cab. I wouldnt pass up on a low houred, power reverser cab tractor that was a good deal but I would rather have a 5020 or 5025 series instead. The cabs are much nicer and they have mid mount hydraulics for the loader which leaves two sets open at all times in the rear.

I don't care much for them at all. Like others have said, the cab is horrible and the clutches don't seem to last in them. I too have replaced several clutches in them that should not have gone out with the hours and use they had on them. If you were going to be in 0* temps the cab would work decent to block the wind but that is about it. If I had to have one it would have to be an open station model. Just my two cents worth.
