544 steering

when it gets cold my 544 the steering freezes up the tractor has to warm up for about a half an hour before it works the loader works just fine i changed the hyd oil and filter our local hyd shop sold us so water displacement but it didnt work any ideas thanks

I did see one 656 where water collected in front bolster and would freeze up. There is a cavity in the middle of piston that the oil just moves back and forth and is only displaced by any small leakage past the piston rings. Problem is, difficult to get at under radiator. You could hook the two steering lines together, coming from steering hand pump to prove or disprove problem is in front bolster.

Some time when you have a few minutes, and when you have the tractor running for 10-15 minutes and your steering is not working grab a bucket and a socket wrench and open up the hydraulic filter housing and inspect the filter and bypass valve/screen. I think you will be able to see what the problem is. BTDT Report back your findings.

He said loader works fine so that pretty much eliminates filter plugging from moisture in oil and heating the front bolster got it working .
