I have just bought a Oliver 550. The pto shaft runs constant whether its in gear or not. What could be wrong, how do you check it out? Thanks

Does it have power, or just turning? Put your foot on it and see if it stops. If not, you can adjust it in the inspection plate on the bottom of the tractor. There is an adjusting nut, and lock pin. Do you have a manual?

As per my manual -1973 Oliver 550. To adjust the PTO clutch, stop engine, release pto lever (push it forward) Remove hand hole cover from under the tractor. The hand hole cover is about in the center of the tractor held in place by four small bolts. Reach through the hand hole and rotate the pto clutch assembly until the adjusting ring lock pin is on the bottom of the assembly. With a screwdriver tip, depress the locking pin and rotate the adjusting ring to the next notch. Clockwise to increase, counterclockwise to decrease clutch engagement pressure. Very easy to do, it may take a few notches to get it adjusted correctly.
The PTO clutch is a dry disc system. When you remove inspection cover there should be no gear oil in there, if there is you may have a bad seal. The oil will get on the discs and gum them up. The PTO turning constantly (freewheeling) on these tractors is very common. I suppose the discs could be warped a little to cause this also, Good Luck.
The article below can be found on the left side of this site under Research and Info, it discusses the PTO also.

When did you buy it? One just sold in the Roanoke, Va. area for 1250 yesterday with bushhog. I was a day too late in calling about it.

I"m in Roanoke. It hit the paper on Monday and sold the same day. I don"t know the condition but, I agree with you....$1250 for a 550 and cutter is a deal even if it needed a lot of TLC. The given number was a Franklin County number. Somebody got a deal and it wasn"t me. Doggone it.

I read online that there may not be anything wrong. Just free wheeling. Hook it up. See if it spins a shaft. If it doesn't...I wouldn't worry with it.

touchy to get just right. I worked and worked to get mine to stop, after putting a new clutch pack and seals. There is also an adjustment on the linkage itself.

and after many hours of bush hogging, it started again.

Issue is you don't know if "free wheeling" or hard engaged. and free wheeling to an adult foot is a lot different that free wheeling to a little kid's curious hand.

I just finally bought a safety cover.

and I shut off the tractor when hooking up.

ever since getting my clothes ripped off by a PTO shaft as a teenager, I never trusted clutch packs or settings again. It was danged cold standing out there by the corn crib in November, loading corn, with just my shoes and skivvies on. Damn shaft took off my coveralls, jeans, shirt and tee shirt!
