550 questions

Hello everyone. I've been thinking a 550 sure would be nice to have in addition to my 770. Probably wont happen anytime soon since I'm still trying to finish a degree that seems to have no end and thus money is a little tight, but would like to know a little more about the tractor. Seems everyone who has one loves it. I've used one but only for a very short period, about 10 minutes, but I was pretty impressed. How relieble are the trans/rear end, engines (gas and diesel), and was there an LP option for the 550? Besides the front axles on tractors with loaders attached, were there any other weak areas. If I were to find one it would be used for brush hogging, blading driveways, moving trailers, maybe someday having a 3pt sickle mower, raking hay... pretty light chores plus a 3pt plow for plow days. What size plows and disks were recommended for the 550 in its day? Also, what price range have you folks seen 550s running? Any other information would be appreciated too. Thanks.

These are outstanding tractors with no real weak areas. Loader is OK but you better have power Steering which is not a real common option. No lp version and some diesels out there but gas is the most common. Price usually follows the get what ya pay for rule. The motors can get a bit pricey to rebuild. They will handle all the jobs you mentioned. 2_3 plow, 6-8 disc and no more than a 6 foot bush hog if you have heavy mowing. They are great unit that's why Oliver made them for so long with very few improvements.

For what I would be doing and for the amount I'd be doing it, I believe a gasser would work just fine for me. I have no plan to have a loader on one so power steering is not an issue, but wouldn't turn one down if previous owner installed it. Thanks for the help. I'll keep my eyes open in case a good deal crosses my path.

I have had a 550 (64 model) for 20 years and it really is a great tractor. the engine and transmission are strong. I gotta say that I have abused it somewhat in working to clear land. I use it for utility work as you mentioned. It plows, discs, bush hogs, clears, etc. I do not know of a better utility tractor. the bearings on the front steering are starting to give out. I am going to rebuild the front end. i dont think I could bear to part with it.
