560 mystery update

Update: A few days ago I posted about how my newly acquired non running 560 backfired a few times then became stuck when attempting to start. The starter deadheaded with the flywheel stuck. I had previously did all the prep that was suggested except the starter to flywheel possibility of binding, although this was not the problem either. Got it to move making all but a fraction of a full revolution in either direction then stopped or felt a solid resistance. I Dropped the pan, nothing obvious to see. Turned the flywheel again back and forth and this time it continued to make full revolutions. I turned it over with the starter several times (no plugs) with no problem, nothing stuck, everything worked/moved just like it did before sticking.

Bottom line: Who knows, I'm over it unless the issue returns, onward! Thanks for everyone's previous replies.

When it stuck and then freed up you could have bent a push rod going to a stuck valve so you may not be as lucky as you think but I hope your lucky

If a carb throttle plate or choke plate screw got into the combustion chamber it will act that way. the screw can be anywhere on the top of a piston. When it is in a squish area, it will stop the turning (unless running) then it will make a terrible noise and you will think the engine is blown. It can collapse a ring land, and break rings. The suggestion to look in the cylinders is valid!!! Jim

That is so true and the reason I thoroughly inspect cylinders on non running tractors with intentions of getting to run.

a compression check will tell you that, plus with that backfiring it is the first thing to do.
