560 Valve setting

Well lesson learned and hopefully a lesson for other newbies and a chuckle to our veteran crowd.


Buddy came over tonight to help and we discovered that the 560 was indeed TDC, but in piston 6 not 1. This caused the valves to appear out of wack! 6 acted like described one solid and one rocking but only because they needed adjustments after new valves.

Once we figured out the camshaft lobes where engaging 6 and 1/2 rev off of 1 we rotated the engine 1 revolution and got 1 to TDC. Then everything in the manual just clicked and we moved onto the next steps quickly.

Used MN advice about making a piston stop proved extremely valuable.


I’m sure plenty on people reading this will poke fun. New guys may get the tip to solve there problem. Either way I’m ok with it. Every veteran lost the virginity somewhere and most likely with a coach. I’m relying on the internet and a manual for my voyage journey.

i will correct you on the TOP DEAD CENTRE thing. in a 6 cylinder engine you have 3 running mates . you indeed had #1 and #6 cylinders at TDC,... as they are both running mates. you needed #1 cyl on compression which you did not pay attention to,... meaning that you had to feel compression being pushed out the plug hole when turning the engine to tdc. at this same time number 6 cylinder is on tdc on the exhaust stroke. and these pushrods will be on the rock in mechanical terms, which means they will be tight and rock when you rock the crankshaft back and forth them rockers are doing the same thing. you always watch the running mates when setting valves. running mates valves will be tight compression valves will be loose and that is the ones you adjust. setting valves this way is following the firing order 153624. so take the last 3 numbers and put them under the first 3 numbers and you have your running mates. 1 and 6, 5 and 2, 3 and 4. that is how you adjust valves on a 6 cyl engine following the firing order. the other way is the simplified method as was shown in the chart posted. you failed to pay attention the to the word[ compression] is all and that will throw u all out of whack. hope this helps for next time.
 
Here’s what happens when an experienced person takes for granted all proper processes will be followed. I just assumed you would do a preliminary loosen of the rocker arm adjusters and set them at near zero when you put the rocker assembly on, in my mind that is a given or common practice during assembly. But since you didn’t do that my explanation of “valves in rock” made no sense to you because they probably were not closing completely. On an engine you have the valve cover or side plate off it is easy to find TDC of compression. The engine is a 4 cycle every 1/2 turn of the crank is 1 of the cycles. Turning the engine the correct direction when the intake valve starts opening on cylinder 1 that is the first cycle (intake) or half turn. When it closes the piston starts the “compression” cycle of that cylinder which is again roughly a 1/2 turn. So a 1/4 turn into that “compression cycle” you start watching your timing marks, when they align you are at TDC compression for that cylinder. Glad you got it all worked out.
