5600 power steering

Hello. I?m new to posting but have looked at this forum for a while. There are some very knowledgeable people here. I have a 5600 gearbox partially apart to replace some seals. On the worm shaft that the 28 ball bearings ride against I?ve been told that the pin in the splined part taps out to expose an o ring that is not listed in the manual that can be replaced. Has anybody heard of that and if so does the pin come out directionally or either way. Also does anybody have any tips for the best way to get all the 28 bearings back in place to make it any easier. It looks like a pain in the rear. Thanks in advance.
 
I am not aware of any o-ring in that box that is not shown in the parts manual. I would advise against trying to separate that control valve torsion bar system.

The 28 balls part is easy - pack the grooves with vaseline and shove the balls in one at a time. As they start to form a track, coat the balls with more vaseline. After you get all 28 balls in place, carefully thread the input shaft into the "threads" formed by the balls, just like you would thread a bolt into a nut. Make sure it threads all the way down, because if it doesn't, you likely dislodged one or more balls.
 
Thank you Bern. I appreciate your advice. One more question for you, when installing those ball bearings there is a small tube that bolts up to the area where the grooves are for the bearings that looks like it empties into the groove in 2 places. I don?t have the manual right in front of me but I believe it calls it a transfer tube or something of that nature. Is that small tube used to feed the balls in in any way or is it something that has nothing to do with the process? Thank you again.
 
I never even take the tube off. In your case, I?d bolt the tube on first, then feed the balls through the slot inside the nut. It will fill the tube as you push the balls into the slot.
 
I took the time to watch the videos. While I very much appreciate the young man's desire to share with us how to re-assemble one of these boxes, it's clear that he is very much a novice and is still in the learning phase when it comes to those boxes. While the videos give a general sense of the order of assembly, it leaves out important little details such as checking rocker shaft end play and shimming for input bearing preload. My advice would be to look at the videos as a general guide on assembly, and then follow the manual closely for the details.

Please note that I am not trashing this young man or his work, as I was once that age as well.
 
Good afternoon Bern, thank you for the advice on the Vaseline to help keep the bearings in place. It is working well. I?ve got one more question for you. In those videos I noticed that on the shaft that has to be threaded down into the bearings there were white Teflon looking seals around the upper end of it. I believe there were 3 of them. My question is did all 5600 year makes have these? The shaft that I pulled out had none. I?m trying to figure out if they were left out when somebody had it apart before or if the part was updated later to not need them. I wouldn?t doubt if they had been left off when apart before because I?ve already found 1 of the 15 balls in the top section was missing as were the preload shims. I believe after this is over with I?m gonna owe you lunch if we ever come across each other in person. Thanks.
 
The teflon seals were introduced beginning with the 10 series tractors in 1981. You'll notice in the videos, the guy is working on a 5610. If you compare the parts catalogs between the 5600 & 5610, you'll see the difference.

What you DO have instead of the teflon seals are a stack of sleeves, each sealed with o-rings between the various pieces. Ideally you'll want to separate out all of these pieces and replace the o-rings. They are all included in the seal kit EGPN-3N503-A. Please note that this kit does not include ALL of the seals for that box, just most of them.

With regards to the pre-load shims, every box should be using at least one or two of them, at least that has been my experience, and I've done a lot of them. If you add the missing ball and don't shim it, you'll likely overload that bearing with way too much pre-load.
 
Much appreciated Sir. I have got the seal kit as well as the 3 various size shims that are listed for it so that I can fit it and check with a feeler gauge as the manual calls for and then install the correct one for the preload. Thanks again Bern.
