5640 Forward-Reverse Shifting

Hey guys, working on my “new to me” 5640, it’s a blue top with a cab, 12x12 trans. Sometimes it’s hard to shift from neutral to forward or reverse, kind of like the shift linkage is jammed. Is there a common place to start or looking for worn pins?

You might look for a small cable on the clutch pedal. (item 9 on the diagram) It goes to the shuttle shift cover on top of the transmission. It operates an interlock mechanism that prevent the shuttle from shifting unless the pedal is depressed. If the cable has a problem or is out of adjustment it can make the shifting difficult to impossible. You will need to pull the floor mat and cab floor plate out to access it.
