565 Plow Questions

Hello all. I've got a 565 4-16 plow to look at and wondering if there are any particular areas to inspect? Other than your wear items, are there any weak points to watch out for?

I'm looking to move up from my IH 60 trailer plow to a semi-mounted for either my 1850 or 1650. The spring hitch on the 60 is pain in the butt. Figured from what I've read on the board here that a 565 is good plow and would be period and actually designed for either of my 50-series to pull. Had looked for a rollover plow for a while but haven't found much in the area...not that common in SW Wisconsin. Just having to live with a less than picture perfect finish in the middle of a field when plowing. Thanks for the help.

The front steering post was not the strongest as it was with some of the other older Oliver plows. There was a guy over by Penn Yan years ago that made a nice side income from machining replacement posts. Dad had to get one for the 575 we used to have.

There were 2 different posts, one was larger in diameter than the other one. I would say if it has not broken by now it is not going to break,

Soil type plays into it, too. There is lots of mean soil here in NY. I would imagine that the smaller post equipped plows here seldom had problems on light loamy ground.

I've got a 4-16 546 that I'm thinking of selling. Has a Midwest Buster Bar on the side that works nice in some soils to smooth them out instead of leaving it so rough. It does need a little work on the linkage in the back for lifting the wheel, but it still works as is. If you're interested let me know. It's a little heavier built than a 565 and I don't really have a use for it any more.

I may be interested in the 546. What's wrong with the rear linkage? Just wondering how much of a project it might be.

Where in WI are you located?

I'm just about done with my fall plowing, but I figure with all of my other projects if I start looking now I might have a
chance to find something good and get it set up in time for next year.

I'm in Hilbert. The plow is at the farm in Kaukauna for now, but I'm probably bringing it to my place in the next month.

The pin the in the pivot arm that the roller is on is cocked and came out of one side of the arm. Looks like it all comes apart easily,I just never think of it until I have it hooked on to go plowing, and then I unhook it and forget again until the next season, and the cycle repeats.

It's got spring cushion colters and cushion trip bottoms. I replaced the front frog a few years ago and I have an extra moldboard that could probably go with.

Looks like you're about 3 hours away, not too bad. Does the plow have coulters? How about sidehill adjustment?

No side hill, but it does have colters.I bought it from the Wisconsin Dells area around 14/15 years ago.

Where in sw wisc are you friend has one for sale . big thing loosen and check the trip on the bottoms i didn't one rock two shares gone. There was a real nice oliver rollover on Craigslist didn't last long

I am in need to two cushion trip beams m/p for a 546, do you know of any place that has a salvage 546?

I got one from All States Ag Parts (black creek location) a few years ago for mine. Can't remember but I think it came off a 508 plow. It's got 2 that are painted red on it now. one I put on, the other was on when I bought it.

I also had to buy a frog for it around the same time. Previous owner must've really hooked a rock and bent the tip of the frog so the share had no support and kept breaking points. That I found locally off craigslist.

Actually one of the advantages of a semi mounted over a trailer plow is the fact that when you plow out you won't have a dead furrow in the center. It takes practice but all you got to do on the last round keep the back end up and replow until its smooth. You will like them i had both ih pull and oliver semi

Make sure the trips are not stuck. They are supposed to be greased but usually are plugged. Darned nice older plow and light years ahead of anything jd built at the time.

I have a 546 that will need one of the plows re attached or use it for parts. A rock took out the entire plow. Rams worked the last time used. I want the whole thing to go. Near WI Dells. Would trade it for a good gravity box
