574 oil

I need some advice. My old 574 has always had low ash 30 wt. oil in it. The engine was
rebuilt about 200 hrs ago. My question is, can I just go with regular conventional 30
wt oil. Or even synthetic? Kind of embarrassed about the question, but just not real
sure what the difference is with low ash oil versus conventional.

When you burn anything, it leaves ash's or a residue of some sort behind, If you had a 460 or a 560 gas in that era,and it used oil, the residue stuck to the valves, and it built up on them, and got very hot, because carbon hold heat a lot longer than metal does, consequently burning the valves. That was the purpose of low ash engine oil. But on the other hand i have never heard of a M or Super M and the like with a burned valve, but i am sure some one has!

But i don't think supermarket oil has enough zinc in it, for the tractors, for the camshaft, because the zinc is the extreme pressure part of the oil, furthermore the EPA, doesn't want to much of that zinc in the oil ! Just use a good Diesel 15W-40 or 10W-30 oil, if its a gas or diesel, or Low ash, i think it's worth it.

I forgot to mention it was a gas engine. So you think Rotella 15W 40 would be a good option

Stick with the low ash 30.

I use 15-40 in all of our tractors here on the farm. Gas and diesel, including our 2 674 gas tractors. Never had a problem.
