58 ' 861 Diesel Problem

Ran the 861 over the weekend to move spome dirt. I used the scoop with the loading lip facing away from the tractor and would back into the pile and then lift and go forward....
Since I am used to my 8n I was a little concerned about the power of the 861D, so when I backed the tractor up to load , I would have the throttle @ minimum.
Sometimes, when it met with some resistance ( rocks or comapcted soil etc) the engine would take off and race like it was @ full throttle.
I would hit the clutch and throttle up then down and it would be fine.
Since I haven't had this tractor long I can't say how it ran before.
It didn't seem to happen when I had the throttle turned up a little higher, but then I was concerned about running into something like a rock and breaking something.
Other then that it ran perfect.
Any suggestions appreciated....

I'm not an expert on this, but it sounds like the governor ring in the fuel injection pump is wearing and needs to be replaced.

A job for a competent DIY'er or a shop. Cost is in the $350 to 450 range depending.

I bought an 861D several years ago and I encountered problems like yours with engine RPM. A couple of months ago it finally reached the point where the RPM was uncontrollable so I removed the pump and tore it down. Several posts concerning this pump reflected folks finding pieces of the plastic governor ring inside the pump. I found nothing- the governor ring was gone completely.
LarryNCKS posted instructions on how to replace the ring on this forum and I'm sure you'll find them in the archives. Also, there is a replacement part available that eliminates the plastic ring. It may be worth checking into.
