580-B Backhoe Hyd.

Hey Guy"s
New to this site. But very familier with tractors in general.
Just bought a 1974 Case 580-B Hoe. When we went to test it out. it had a very high pitched squeal as soon as it was running. that soon went away,
It sounded as if it was low of Hyd fluid but it checked full.
Everything was at a stand still till it warmed up.But after that. it did just fine and had plenty of power to load and dig.
Do not know how long it has been since a full service. going on how it looks I would say a long time.
Guy"s any and all help is appreciated.

Sounds like the filter-bypass valve cracking open due the cold oil being too thick to get through the filter, filer partially clogged, or both. Hoes that get started often in cold temps (below 20 F) usually need a winter-grade of hydraulic oil, e.g. 10W.

BigD, The noise you heard was probably the transmission pressure lines singing that run from the Trans control valve to the Trans filter located up front of the radiator and cooler in the bottom of the radiator. It would be a good thing to replace the filter as you have just purchased it and probably don't know when for sure that a service was done. Also a oil change is probably in order. The lag time till the drive will move is somewhat typical as the torque converter will drain back to sump while sitting and must refill once the engine is running. Some are worse than others and most operators when these were in heavy use commercially would start them up and take a coffee break, the clutch spool travel adjustment is important as well and the adjustment procedure and setting dimensions are in the Service manual as well. Most have never been opened up for service yet. The converter charge pressure can be tested under the tank at the converter relief valve if you suspect a mechanicl problem or just to be sure, you should get a copy of the Power Shuttle/ Torque Converter portion of the service manual. Be sure to use good oil designed for Power shuttle use, A oil that meets TCH specs is adequate. mEl

Good observation J, the cold oil relief is screwed into the system pump under the top cover under the tank. Have had to dig the filter element out of the housing in extreme cases where the pressure had collapsed it. Have seen several suction screens plugged also. Hard to cover all the eventualities in one post, kinda need the old memory jogged a bit. Thanks, mEl

Gentelmen:
You have given me enough to keep me busy checking on things for while.
That"s why I came to this site. everything you gentelmen have mentioned will be looked into.
This old hoe is not ready for retirement yet.

Again Thanks for your info.

Most of the major tractor companies that use combination trans/hydraulic oil have had many service bulletins out relating to the combo oil in cold weather (Case-IH Hytran, Deere Hyguard, Cat TO-2, Allison C-4, etc.)

I kind of lost track but generally speaking, the combo oils used to be 20W and were only good for temps down to 20 degrees F. Then many companies came out special winter-grades that were 10W that were good for 15 below F. Now, many of the premium combo-oils are 5W-30 and good for 22 below F. Case Hy-Tran Ultra is 5W-30 and is rated for temps down to 20 below F and meet Case specs MS-1209. Deere Hy-Gard wintergrade is the same and meets specs J20D.
