580 CK DIESEL ENGINE PROBLEM-

I just purchased a 580ck backhoe from a older gentleman who never ran the tractor more than 1/2 throttle...Needles to say I ran it home full throttle and it overheated 3 times. I replaced the thermostat and raidiator cap with some success HOWEVER- I think I ran it too hot and it now has very high oil pressure at the filler and now leaks oil in the front of the engine somewhere. Did I blow the head gasket ????????[color=blue:0e5cb1c994][/color:0e5cb1c994]

Sympathies and welcome to the 580 problems club.

Have one that had blown head gasket. Check oil for water. You may have to drain the oil to be sure about water. Not sure what you mean by changing thermostat and radiator cap with some success. After running the engine some with radiator cap off, look into radiator and see if water is boiling vigorously. Blown head gasket probably will make radiator overflow. Look at exhaust when first cranked up, if water is getting into a cylinder youw should see white smoke which is water vapor. Try to localize the oil leak at the front of the engine and see if it looks like an oil seal. By pressure at the filler cap, do you mean it is acting like it is over full of oil? This could mean water is getting into the crankcase and raising the oil level.

If you decide you have to remove the head, post back and I'll give you some details. Also you should get a shop manual, operators manual talks mostly about how to operate backhoe, not mechanical repairs. Manual availiable on this site.

Get local opinion if possible also.

It was blowing anti-freeze really bad then I replaced the thermostat and radiator cap and it eased the overflow but, I then noticed the high pressure generated at the oil fill. It's really hard to see exactly where the oil is seeping out in the front end because of all the metal on the front of the tractor.

My local case dealer told me it might be a head gasket but they want to look at it to confirm....

Sounding more like a head gasket. If you decide to take the head off, you must first remove the hood, heavy front housing around the radiator, and the radiator. Good luck.

Thanks for your help... I have some good news !!! The previous owner has agreed to pay for the repair. Mechanics I have spoken to about the problem agreed that it was probably a problem well before I bought it.
