580 E backhoe starter issues

i have a 580E case backhoe. today i used it on and off all day. when i tried to start it to put it away, nothing happened. i have 12 volts at the starter, but no voltage at the starter solenoid when key is turned to start. anyone have a idea of what could be wrong? thanks.

Check to see none of the circuit breakers have popped out and need pushing back, the start circuit from the switch goes first to the neutral start on the shuttle to a relay and then to the starter solnoid, the neutral switch on the shuttle has two wires and is on the righ side near the back,it is directly opposite the clutch cutout solenoid, put those two wires together to test the switch,if you have no joy there trace the wiring till you find the relay and check that, make sure you have the machine out of gear and the parking brake on when tampering with the starting circuit.

The early E's burned out the starter key switch, there was a conversion kit available D101559,the relay was D128310,maybe your machine was never changed and your key switch has gone bad.

No point getting a switch till you are sure that's what's needed, get yourself a 12V test lamp, get a second person in the seat to hold the key in the start position, yourself underneath check to see if there is power at the neutral start switch,if you have no power check the key switch,if you have power at both terminals of the neutral start switch go to the starter motor and check to see if the small wire going to the solnoid is hot,if so problem is in solnoid if not the broblem is between the neutral start switch and the solenoid, use a jumper wire between the small solenoid wire and the main battery cable to see if the starter is working.

replaced the relays. have power @ starter and small solenoid wire. starter shop has checked starter and say it's fine. no breaks in ground cables. it should turn over, but won't. no click, no slow turning, no anything. any more ideas?

If you got power in the small wire at the solenoid then everything else is ok on the circuit from the key switch down, check the battery cables, the ground cable connects to the battery box,the battery box is bolted to the frame, there is another ground strap between the frame and the engine as the engine sits on rubber mountings, check that the ground strap is making a good connection to the battery box, check the box is tightly bolted to the frame and check the ground strap between the frame and starter/engine,I am taking it for granted that the battery is good and the engine is not locked up,when you use a jumper wire on the starter from the main cable to the solenoid exiting wire everything is by passed from the key down,if it is not turning over either there is no power for whatever reason bad connections, bad battery or the starter or engine has an issue.

the positive battery cable was seperated about 1/2 way to the starter. it looks like when the cable was made, some one butted 2 cables together to make it longer before the protective covering was applied. go figure. thanks for the help.
