580C pump timing

I'm getting ready to install a rebuilt injection pump "someone" removed for repair some weeks back. The fellow supposedly "knew what he was doing" and set it up in proper time before removing it.

Maybe. For some reason he seems to be unavailable to put it back.

There is a sticker on the valve cover listing the engine model as G207D, and shows pump timing at 0 degrees. Question is where are the engine marks located? There is a small tin cover with one bolt at about the two o'clock position over the flywheel area that might be a window. Could that be it or should I be looking elsewhere?

The little teardrop cover cover behind the starter should have a roll pin as a pointer, the degree marks may be a little difficult to find but you should be able to turn the engine from there also. remember the marks will come up only on the end of the compression stroke so you may have to turn it another turn if the pump marks are not there, If you are replacing the pump make sure the dots on the end of the shaft and the dot in the pump are the same location, be very careful not to roll the umbrella seals also. Be very clean!!!

The shaft is already in the pump. I'm guessing it was pulled that way. ASSUMING the pump;s internal marks were in register at that point, I think if the shaft matches the keyway in the drive gear with those marks lined up (or close at least) that the flywheel marks should be somewhere close to view in the window.

There must also be a marked tooth on the pump gear. Would that be a line, a dot, or what?

There are single dots on both the pump gear and an Idler gear, there is a two ended pointer that bolts on the face of the idler retainer plate that points to the two dots, If the pump was timed upon removal I would reinstall it and hope he gave you good info, I would not turn the engine without the pump drive gear being on its shaft so it cannot bind. Let us know how it works out.
