584 IH lost hydraulics

JimB- I opened the hyd.line leading from the mcv to the steering control. The line bled foamy oil and gave off spurts of air-oil when I turned the steering wheel. The port that the line was connedted to on the bottom of the front of the mcv did not show any signs of oil coming out. I ran the rpm at 1400 for 20 minutes and got some front wheel movement but still no loader, pto, steering,or 3pt. Should I look at the flow divider or could the mcv dirty. I cleaned out the hydraulic reservoir and examined the mcv when I first put in the woodruff key.

JimB I forgot to mention that I had 45lbs of air on the filler port for oil and had the dipstict removed and blocked that hole tool.jh

Hi Jerry, the spurts of oil and air would make me believe there is a problem with air getting into the suction line of the hydraulic pump. Bad "O" ring or clogged suction pickup. If the flow divider was stuck in the MCV, there would be PS & PB but no 3pt or 3pt and no PS & PB.
Here is what Bernard has to say about suction tube:
Hi, your suction strainer is plugged. It's on the suction line, on rear end of the pipe. Drain the oil, put a 3/4 allen tool on big plug and remove it, the strainer is inside the elbow, unscrew it and clean with solvent. Clean the dirt out of the elbow.

Remove the regulator valve and spring,( plug on the bottom of the MCV ) Do not put the plug back on and start the unit at idle. It takes about 30 seconds and you will see oil come out of the port. Install the regulating valve and spring back in the unit and it should be fine. I have done this many times. Have a bucket under you MCV when doing this. RAS

Thanks, I will be on this tomorrow if it stops raining and snowing.I have had it outside for 3 weeks now trying to get everything right. I do appreciate the help. The repair people around here are just waiting for me to give up. But I don't care if I am on this til spring because I will eventually figure it out and do some logging this year or next.jh

RAS- the good news is I tried your method first. Because it seemed easier. I removed the valve under the mcv and put a pan under it. 3 seconds after the tractor started the pan was full of oil.I repeated with a larger pan. I gained steering,pto,3pt.frontloader. Everything is now okey. Thank you and thanks to JimB for the help. Now that I have some confidence I will work on the new seat and my cylinders. The bad news is I have to clean up all the messey oiley rags and oiley straw. Thanks again to all of you for the much needed help. And most of all thank you for introducing me to the works of Bernard le Mecano. I have begun to read all his postings in the archives. jh Atwater,Ohio USA
