585 Engines....

I dont know much about the 585 engines, good points? bad points? Things to look for on them? Thnking about getting a bigger tractor than the M670Super....

I love mine...I like the direct injection better for a lot of reasons, not the least of which, it starts easier. I know they have had oil pump problems and have heard the rod bolts seem to have some issues?? I rebuilt mine a couple years ago and I am very happy with its performance. Parts aren't cheap but no diesel parts are. Everything on it is big, so pack a lunch if you decide to tear into it.

I think the 585's are great engines. We ran them for years in our A4T-1600's. The external oil pumps fixed their biggest problems. Before the external oil pumps, many of these engines broke the camshafts.
If you need a tractor bigger than the M670, you might want to consider a G900 or G1000. They have many of the same parts (pistons, heads, etc) as the M670. Finding parts for the 585's is probably a little tougher. The 585 was not in alot of tractors A4T's, G1350 and the G1355 (which was half Oliver). The White 2-150 also had the 585 engine. Good luck in your search.

Our neighbors had one years ago and it was nothing but trouble. Seems like it dropped valves one two occassions, and had two go through most of the motor. He said that the over/under used to get hot when working hard too.

About the only White I would recommend would be a 100 series with a Cummins motor and the heavy rear end and Diff lock. They are hard to find though. We had a 135 and a 110. The 135 was one thing after another over the years. In the last few years, every time we got it out of the shed it had to go to the dealer for some repair...engine overhaul, 3 speed, broken PTO shaft, leaks, loose steering, etc. It only had 3800 hours on it when it went down the road. The neighbors all bought 4440's and they will consistently run around 10,000 trouble free hours. Dad paid for that 2-135 two times over with all the repair bills.

The 2-110 was a nice tractor in many ways, but the rear wheel hubs had a tendency to work loose if you lugged it very hard. I think we changed out three of them, and they are getting harder to find all the time. White should have used the heavy rear end like the 135's in all tractors over 100 HP. The diff lock would have been nice when pulling loaded wagons out of a damp field in the fall.

If you want to stick with a Moline, the G900 is about the most reliable. I like G1000's, but it seems like so many of them had rear end issues. The only parts out there are what you can find at salvage yards and they are getting pretty well picked over.

We once farmed with the Molines. Now we have the 100 series Whites with the cummins engines (about 8 of them). I am not aware of any engine problems in any of them. Our FWA 100 is used daily, has over 10,000 hours and does not burn a drop of oil.

I have never heard anything but good about the 100 series. The combination of the Cummins engine and the heavy duty rear-end with the sturdy taper-lock wheels was hard to beat. Around here they are very hard to find. By the time they came out, White's market share around here was about nothing. I really like the looks of the Workhorse series myself.

We actually paid about $2000 for one of the 100's. It was hauled to an auction and they wrote salvage on it becuase it wouldn't start. We bought the tractor thinking it would be good for parts. A few minutes after we bought the tractor, somebody noticed that the solenoid wire was not hooked to the injection pump. We fixed that and the tractor fired right up. At the same auction, there was a 170 White that originally sold for $5000. Somebody asked my dad why he didn't buy that one. He said I really don't know. We found that buyer and quickly paid him $6000 for the tractor which was still a bargain. We changed the pto setup in that tractor, and its now our major hay baling tractor. Here is a list of our Whites:
100 FWA and 100 2wd's
2 125 2wd's
120 2wd
170 2wd
195 FWA
6195 FWA
6215 FWA

Oh yeah-we have a 2-135 too, but nothing like the tractors with the cummins engines

I like mine. It is in a G-1355 and it has an aftermarket turbo and is pushing about 180 HP out of that 585ci engine.

They had there share of problems over the years, the interal oil pumps were a problem, some had valve problems dropping valves, and as they would get older they would not want to start and people would feed them starting fluid and break all the rings up in the #1 and #2 Pistons.

We overhauled the 1355 about 4 years ago and fixed all the weak points, put in 30 over pistons with more rings on it, put the thin head gaskets on and added a charger and turned up the fuel. It can pull tillage all day at a hard pull and never smoke or get hot. It does like diesel fuel more than most, but it is a big engine.

When the 585s are built right and taken care of properly, warmed up before pulling and cooled down before shutting off and never any starting fluid, they can be very good engines for a long time.
