6-2 power block

looking for pros and cons of building a ‘49 Jd A with a 6-2 power block. Can they handle high compression and 8-9 inch stroke? Or can the same power be made with a bored stock block?

Sleeves is the big pro there aren’t terribly many cons other than the is it worth it question. I suppose it not being original but that ship has sailed if this question is being asked. I wish I had a 6-3 for my 52.

Aren’t power block prone to cracking? Maybe more than regular JD blocks? Are there ways to prevent that? And are new sleeves available?

Well at the moment I’m fighting a coolant leak on the late A and if everything else I try as far as the head and head gasket goes does not work im going to have to pull the block out and have it checked so it is a weak area of concern on both therefore I consider it a wash and again would prefer to be able to put liners in.

Running coolant not water is a good way to help prevent cracking. We had a local one this year that needed redone from freezing. That’s about what you can do. When you are putting sleeves in make sure everything is clean and square.

Most local machine shops can find sleeves there are several online sources as well. Search John Deere power block and the info will appear if you don’t want to do any measuring. My local Arnold’s had done enough of them he was pretty sure all 2 cylinder blocks had sleeves. Go figure.
