6 or12 volt

how can you tell what a 4000 is,6 or 12 volt.what would i look for.any help would be nice.I posted the serial#s one person told me it was a 63 and the other told me it was a 64.I would like to know so i order the right manual for it.the #s are 41201under that is 17773 under the seat 2 feet down under a lever next to a dip stick(ithink is for pto)is conn4024,2k2o on right side under seat 2 feet down is,conn6015J,2f19.does anyone know what it is.

If it is gasoline it left the factory with a 6V, Positive ground electrical system. If it is diesel it left the factory with a 12V, Negative ground system. After 45 years and several owners there's no telling what it is now. However, you are lucky- the original manual covers both 6V and 12V systems.
How many cells are there in the battery? 3 cells = 6V. 6 cells = 12V.

your quickest way would be to look at the battery and see if it is 6 or 12.

According to John Smith's website the serial numbers for 1963 started with 11948 and ended with 38930 so your tractor would have been produced around March of 1963 assuming production stayed level throughout the year. The same manual is going to cover both years though. You just want to make sure you don't get a 1965 & later manual as these are completely different machines.

Does your tractor have a 3 point lft and PTO? Your model number indicates it didn't from the factory

yes rick, it does have a 3 point hitch and pto.So i have a 1963,is that correct.

17522 was the first tractor built in march 1963 and the last one was 20350.

That puts your tractor built in the first week of march 1963

John's right I misread the chart. Your tractor did leave the factory with a PTO but without the 3 point lift.

rick,it has a pto,a3pt hitch,and 2 hydrolic connectors sticking out from under the back seat and 2 handles sticking out from the front of the seat .what was the hydrolic used for.can you help me with this.

all i know is, it is a 4000 and it has pto,3pt hitch and hydrolic fittings sticking out from behind the seatand it runs good,but i still have a lot to learn about it.

So are we to assume that no tractors came with 3 point lift since none of them list it; OR should we assume that all tractors came with 3 point lift so they did not think it was necessary to show it in the list; OR should we assume that this list is either wrong or incomplete.

Since I have seen this same exact list on other web sites I have to believe they are all copying off one another and may all have it wrong; OR that the list is correct and all tractors had 3 point lift.

With all that said I believe the list is not really wrong but rather incomplete. I would also be more likely to believe that all the models above came with hydraulic 3 point lift and if some models did not come with it they are just not listed here. Since owner manuals from the 62 to 64 model years are hard to find I may never know the true answer to your question.

I see what you mean. That's hard to see with the way the info is listed on the website. I just assumed the stripped down X20/X21 & X30/X31 carried forward into the 4-cyl thousand series. But now that I look at those they weren't offered with a pto and w/o the 3-point hitch.

I did notice the other day that someone is selling what looks like a reprint of the 2000/4000 owner's manual pretty cheap on ebay. Don't know if the quality is any good.

I have pretty much told you already what you have in another post.
A 4000 ag tractor with a 4 speed trans; 3 point lift; and PTO. The extra 2 hyd fittings and handles is a add on option.

But if you would like to confurm this with pictures email them to me.

I don't want you to think I have a different opinion than John. Based on the numbers you have given you have a 1963 Ford 4000 All-Purpose Tractor with a 172 ci engine and 4-speed transmission. Based on John's feedback & expertise I agree it came from the factory with a PTO & 3 point hitch. Here's a photo of a nice one from the photo archives.

I guess I need to scan that manual sometime.

thanks rick, it does look just like mine exept for the front axle.the front axle is a I beam looking axle but i will take pictures of it and post them thur. or fri.it dont look as good as that one but just like it.

If your front axle looks like a I beam there is 2 possibilities.
You are reading the model # wrong and it really says 41301 OR..........
You have a mutt with parts from several tractors.

The solid front axle was only available on the industrial models and your model # is for a ag tractor.

john,itook a good look this time.it is a 63,ilooked on the radiator and it says 1-63.onleft side b-hind starter its 41201 then 17773.on block on left side is 2f19.on rearend is 2k20then conn4024f.on oil filter is51452.onright side block is conn6015j.on trans.is310835-3a28.it is a 63.Iask,the man who sold it,was his dads.sat for two years in a barn not moved.it does have adjustable axle in front.I,ll take pics and send them tomorrow.

Note the IT FO-20 manual list the 4 speed trans at 6.5 Q, all other numbers are the same.
As far as oil, that is a "slippery" subject. LOL
The specs in the original owners manual are outdated. There are many different options on what to use.I use oil that meets the NH 134 spec in the Trans Hydraulics and the rear end.
