Hello ,I have an 881 s.o.s.that has 12 v battery,just replaced new 12v starter,coil,points
cond.,cap ,rotor,wires
will spin over and not run until I use a jumper from battery + to coil + the solenoid is 6v
alternator (delco)has an r no wire hooked to it, the f has a wire running to the + side of coil, batt.wire goes to battery side of solenoid
still has 6v regulator,charging light
do I need to rewire this ?,replace 6v sol.with a 12v,get rid of regulator,if I rewire would the drawing that john has on here for 601/801 3
work on this 801 ?
Thanks, mike

On your Delco alternator, are the R and F terminals on the back side of the alternator about half way between center of rotating shaft and outer edge, or are they on the outer edge?

If they are on the back closer to the center, it sounds like you have the older 10DN alternator that requires an external regulator. The original 6 volt generator regulator will not work with an alternator.

The F (field) on a 10DN comes from regulator and controls the charge rate. The coil should be powered from an ignition switch fed from the BAT wire on alternator.

If my assumptions about the alternator are correct and it were mine, I would eliminate the 6 volt regulator and replace the alternator with one with internal regulator.

If you have the delco 10DN alternator the wiring diagrams I have posted on here will not work. All my diagrams are for delco 10SI alternators with a internal regulator and the DN uses a external regulator.

In either case this will not stop the tractor from running. It may not charge the battery but will run if you wire it correctly.

The F wire on the alternator goes to the regulator and the coil does not hook to the alternator.
Take the wire from F to + coil off. Now run a wire from + coil to the keyed side (power only with key on). You can hook this wire to the key switch or the terminal block if you have one; but it must be keyed power.

Now the tractor should run. Like I said it will not charge the battery but it will run.
To get it to charge get a regulator that goes with the 10DN alternator and wire the alternator/regulator like the picture above. OR better yet; do away with the regulator/alternator and get a Delco 10SI alternator with internal regulator and wire it per my diagram on this site.

I removed the old regulator and rewired - it runs ! autozone has an 10SI alternator for $30.
I will be replacing that this week

Thanks everyone for all the help !
this is a great site with Great People !
