6 Volt alternators

Ive been seeing six volt alternators by googling and on EBay, but theyre all positive ground. I dont want to go to 12 volts because I did that once on a 48 Ford and just thought it was too hard on the starter. My tractors service manual says my 57 Case is supposed to be negative ground, and does seem to work okay with positive ground, unless its the reason the newly rebuilt generator is shot. (Its not the regulator). So my question is has anybody put on one of these 6 volt alternators and if so did you reverse the polarity on it and how do you like the alternator? Thanks

We buy the kits and build them ourselves. We have done a bunch of them. All you need is old GM alternator and a kit.
We have put them on a lot of Fords, Farmalls and Olivers. This tractor has one, works great

You can get six volt neg ground. What model of Case do you have? The S,D, and LA were the only ones I know that were negative ground.

I have a 6 volt neg ground alt on my SC Case and also a 6 volt pos ground alt on my VAC Case, both work great, I have them wired as 3 wire instead of single wire because that's what I prefer. And these are working tractors

Thanks, I have a 57 Case 400 wheat land. I got a copy of the original shop manual from 1957. I asked a couple if the companies that sell them if theyre reversible polarity but probably wont hear back for a while. I think that one I reversed I just turned on the power to the armature from the battery which was hooked up the way I wanted, then touched a jump wire for just a moment from armature to field, does that sound right? I may as well get the go ahead from the seller beforehand so if something goes wrong he cant not take it back

I ordered them from the Brillman Company. They are the 10SI Delco type, I did not have to change anything because I was able to specify if I wanted pos or neg ground when I ordered them. Brillman phone is 888-274-5562

Thanks, I saw one ad somewhere from a small shop. Do you make them with either polarity? Are yours on EBay? Alternators need more speed so Im looking at pulley size. If I use a AX belt I can go pretty small

Thanks, I put one of those in a truck once I think, if thats the popular big GM alternator. I guess it might make sense to use a big one if its not generating at all during low engine speed.

Yes, mine are the normal size GM 10 SI alternator. The way I have mine wired they start charging as soon as the engine is running no matter the engine speed. I don't remember what output amps are

That sounds like polarizing a generator. Alternators are built for one polarity, they have diodes. I never heard of polarizing an alternator.

ell, Jim, ya know, for some, one size fits all.................they don't even know one from another. So sad.

This is what I bought for a Farmall sc , its a kit for conversion of a gm 10si alternator to 6 volt positive ground offer on eBay . I post a photo of installation so you can decide better what to do in your situation.
As far as performance, after 5 years no issues , I like it !
If you want to fix your generator there are repairs available also just need the tag numbers ,and there are a few good repair shops around ,guy need to support them or they will go away.
Good luck .

I used the 3 wire setup on mine. The main wire going to the amp gauge, the two smaller wires that plug in are 1 and 2. White wire Number 2 I jumped to the main post on the alt. Red wire Number 1 turns it on at the IGN switch and has a one way diode wired in to prevent backfeed, which can drain the battery or prevent the tractor from staying running if battery ignition.

(quoted from post at 14:42:22 12/13/21) Thanks, do you remember how you wired it? Did you say you wired a one wire with 3 wires?
say that some caution is in order here! He/you are being shown/talked both pos gnd and neg gnd installations in this thread, so you are likely confused. Be careful folks.

Thanks very much for that. I just ordered one from Brillmans.
I asked the tech guy there about using three wires, as he only sells the six volt alternators with one wire. He suggested trying it with one wire then if I needed more low speed generation, add the two wires.

Does the plug you mention with three wires, plug in where the one wire I will be getting goes?
