is there any way 2 tell if my tractor is a positive or negative ground the fella I bought it from said he didnt know but it could be either,my first tractor,never heard of a positive ground but I was only 1 when it was made I want 2 keep it 6 volt i'm no pro-wrench but i'm somewhat handy can anyone help me

Look at the positive (+) battery terminal (the bigger one). Follow the cable. Does it go to the block or the starter? If it goes to the starter, it's negative ground. If it goes to the block, it's positive ground. If it is 6v, it could be hooked up either way. If it's 12v, chances are 99 out of 100 it's negative ground. A 6v battery has 3 caps; a 12v has 6. Count 'em.

When new it was + ground and all tractor where that way up till the mid to late 50s. Now if it has an alternator on it then it will be most likely - ground. If it has a genny one it then most will work either way but would have been + ground when new. Also is this tractor a front or side mount distubutor?? If its a side mount look at the coil and see which side of the coil goes to the distubutor. If the + side of the coil goes there then its + ground if the other way some one has switched it to - ground. It will run either way and the starter will turn the correct way hooked up either way

When it was new it was pos. ground. If it has been altered such as a 12volt conversion, it is likely now a neg. ground. I am looking at the wiring diagram, but am unable to send it. About half way down the page I am posting is the wiring diagram.
