6 volt generator

I'm back. Here is what I have done so far; battery was tested at Auto Zone, OK; motor test, ground field to case, jumped from neg bat post to ARM, generator ran, took off ground, generator reversed direction, ran faster; ground field to case, no charge,ran tractor and jumped VR Bat to VR gen,ammeter guage on tractor pegged total discharge. Now when I run the tractor, the guage shows total discharge.I probably messed something up. Brushes are 3/4" and springs are tight against brushes. I quit for the day. Thanks, Bill

And that is in the wrong order. You jump those terminals before you start it.

1. Did you Polarize the genny once all was hooked up but BEFORE you started it??????

2. If the ammeter is wired correct to match your polarity, if you turn lights or igniton on BEFORE starting it the meter should swing over to - discharge....If it does the opposite the leads need swapped side to side

3. Im wondering if your fields are internally shorted orrrrrrrrrrrr where the FLD post exits the case its been overtightened (broke insulation)and the Fields are shorted there to case, that pass thru post should be insulated from the case

Insure ammeter polarity is correct for your ground (per the above) regardless, it still wires as I previously told you, Supply side only has one wire to the batetry often where the big battery cable attaches to switch and the Load side wires to the Cutout Relay or Voltage Regulators BAT terminal PLUS feeds hot batery voltage to light and/or ignition switches inputs

Polarize the genny prior to start up

The run the ground the field test and by pass the cutout relay tests (in my Troubleshooting Procedure) if needed to see if non charging is a genny or other problem

To test the fields for continuity and insure they are NOT grounded/shorted to case its easy if the armature is removed. If so, there should be like a few ohms but a continuous circuit from the FLD to ARM post (fields continuity) BUTTTTTTT infinity ohms open circuit form either post to case (unless a post or field is shorted/grounded)

To test to see if the armature is shorted use an ohm meter on its copper commutator segments and there should be NOOOOOOO continuity from any to the steel shaft otherwise its shorted.

Ima thinkin shes not polarized or theres a field problem or shes not wired right?????

This is about all I can help you with over the net not being there armed with a multi meter. Get a manual or someone with some basic electrical knowledge to help you or have it repaired at a shop if you cant get her to charge..

Good evening. I polarize the gen. each time I put the gen. back on and each time I hooked the battery back up. I will put my other VR on tomorrow and see if the ammeter reads okay. When I pull the starter switch, the ammeter swings 1 mark left of center. When I start the tractor the needle pegs out all the way to the left so I probably fried something.
