6 volt lights

my 49 8n had no lights, it is 6 volts, postive ground. i just got a set of lights off a 8n 6 volt. they only have one wire coming out of them.do i hook it the positve or neg side of the battery?

If I were you, I'd hook them to an ignition switch. Makes it easy to turn them off & on.

Do not run the light switch through the ignition switch. You will burn up the ignition switch.

brokenjunk,If its positive ground,The switch would hook to the negative post or terminal,or post at the amp meter.

ruce, you didn't tell him which side of battery! So, I'll answer. Either side is OK, it is just that they will only light up if you connect them to the non-grounded terminal.
Bulbs will last longer connected to grounded side, but then again, how would you know if they were burned out or not?

Since your tractor is positive ground you want to connect the wire to the negative terminal of the battery through a switch. The light uses the sheet metal contact of the light mounting to provide the return path. With old rusty tractors this often makes for a very poor return path and very dim lights. You will most likely get better lighting by running a second wire as a return "ground" back to the positive battery post or to a good clean ground connection on the cast part of the tractor.
