6 volt question

On a 6-volt generator- do I need to have a resistor or some load on the field side of the generator in order for it to produce a charge? All I need is for the generator to charge the battery but don't know exactly how to connect the field side of the generator.

You need a 6 volt voltage regulator and you need to tell the salesman that you have positive or negative ground ..The field side goes to the letter F terminal on the regulator and the gen side goes to the gen terminal and that one is usually the terminal on the bottom of the regulator..Looking at the regulator find the BAT terminal and run a wire from that to the ignition switch and from there to one side of the APM gauge..Then from the other side of the Amp gauge to the battery (which ever is not the ground side)..The switch will cut out all current if the generator happens to back feed with the engine shut off..Many of good barns have been burnt to the ground due to back feed..Use a good 10 gauge gas/oil/heat proof wire for this..If all of your wiring is correct and still no charge then you may need to polarize the regulator and I have forgotten how so ask the salesman at your dealer or someone here can tell you..If your amp gauge reads NEG. charge then swap the wires on the gauge..
