6 volt to 12 volt

I would like to know what all i have to change or to do to go from a 6 volt to a 12 volt on a H farmall? I also need to know will the lights on it work on 12 volts or any thing need to be changed on that. It is on 6 volts now BUT I took the 6 volt battery off and replaced it with a 12 volt to start it.I want it on 12 volts and everything to work on 12.

This is some good information I discovered online.

The most awkward item is an alternator and hanger that fits well under the hood. Please don't hack on the sheet metal to make it fit. I think it completely destroys the attractive lines of a Farmall letter series tractor.

Lights need to be changed to 12 volt ones. The 6 volt ones will burn out almost as fast as you turn them on. Also you need either a ballast resister of a true 12 volt coil, or you will burn the coil up. Then of course you have to rewire it so the alternator will do its job correctly

Are you already converted and having problems with the lights, or are you in the planning stages of converting?

With the alternator, you can eliminae the voltage regulator, but have to wire in a resistor for your coil (uless you have a magneto), and need a diode to keep the alternator from draining your battery. The advice about carving up your tin to make the alternator fit is certainly worth considering, too.

There is a wiring diagram in archives done by Bob M to convert from 6 to 12 volt system. It is great and if you follow it it is hard to go wrong. Only problem with H is you may need to find a smaller alternator to get under the hood. Believe some of the foreign jobs work better.

If you got a magneto, all you need is a 12 volt battery. Make that starter spin like a sewing machine. You do need 12v lites. Napa 4411, I think.

I'm just asking, but why change it? I'd try to put a 6v battery in it, clean ALL connections up and see what happens. Sounds like you have all you need for a 6v system but maybe a battery. 6v batteries are pretty inexpensive. Go to the CaseIH dealer and get a big one, though. Don't put one of those little ones from TSC in it or anything. As for the starter thing, I've seen several 6v starters burnt up from using a 12v or even an 8v battery. It all depends on the number of starts. If you start your tractor once a year the starter will last 365 times longer than if you start it daily.

i would agree with bob m.You might be very surprised after u clean all your connections properly.My sc turns over like crazy now that i got the green stuff off and put no-ox on the connections before i tightened em all down.Lots cheaper too just a bit of time and elbow grease.

David: Why 12 volt, 6 volts will start a well tuned Farmall H, SH, 300 or 350 anytime down to temperatures of -40. Surely your not out on an open station Farmall H, when it's colder than -40.

You may as well learn, tractor electrical systems require a lot of annual maintainence that cars and pickups don't. Unless your prepared to do that maintainence 12 volt will cause you just as much grief as 6 volt, and will not start any better. I have 3 tractors here, all basically the same engine. one is 6 volt and the other two are 12 volt. I garentee you the 6 volt tractor will be out the door with the rest on a cold morning, in fact it may be ahead of the others, definitely not last.
