6 x 6 Pickup Conversion

A program on RFD featured a 3/4 ton Chev pickup which the owner had converted to a tandam rear axle. He very briefly and quickly went over the setup. I would like to see more details on yow ha drives both rear axles. Anybody have any ideas?

The owner mentioned that he used two transfer cases but didn't show how second transfer case mounted or how it got power to second rear axle.

One idea that would work would be to make another pinion housing that would bolt on where the rear cover bolts on the front differential. Would be rather expensive to make but it would work.

In the 40's and 50's, some automobile differentials had true banjo housings where the front of the housing was like the back of the housing. I don't know any particular model, or of any 3/4 to rear end so made. If you could find two banjo case differentials, you could mount a third pinion housing on the rear side of the front differential and run a short drive shaft to the rear differential, which would have to be turned over. This would be much simpler than using an additional transfer case.

chevy used a similer setup on some of its tandem drive medium duty trucks back in the late 50's and early 60's, one way to do it would be to cut out the rear differential from the axle tubes, then install one from the same seried front differential. so the ring and pinion would be set up to turn the proper way, but the driveshaft yolk would be facing the rear of the truck, then the transfer case could be mounted to the truck frame between the 2 axles, one driven by the front output shaft of the transfer case, one driven by the rear one, the input shaft would come in over the top of the first drive axle, now a lot of people mess this up when it comes to suspension, and even for a 'dead' axle mounted behind the drive axle they mount the axles independently, this creates a big problem on uneven terrain as the rear axle can actually lift the drive axle off the ground when it goes over a bump ect, on any tandem axle drive setup both axles must be mounted in such a way as to work togeather, ie like a modern big truck does, there are numorus ways to do this but the simplest is a hendrickson style set up with the axles mounted to the ends of a pivoting beam which itself is then sprung from the truck frame, it can , and has been done just takes some thinking and a good fabrication man
 
One of the simplest solutions, which would be almost impossable to find is: In WW-II dodge came out with a 1 1/2 ton version of it's 3/4 ton military truck. To build this WC-62 and WC-63 truck model they extended the frame 48 inches and added a tandam axle. Basicly, everything else was the same as the 3/4 ton WC-52 truck. If you could find these rear axles they would work prefectly.

In WW2 some tandem axle trucks used a trandfer case that used 2 drivelines, I cant remember what trucks used them, but the differentials were offset and the front carrier bearing for the rear diff. was mounted on the front axel housing.

You can run the drive shaft off the center brake drum or the off set output
which was the normal output.
 
I wonder if he installed th extra transfer case backwards, so the input flange / yoke and front axle flange/ yoke drove the two rear axles. Then a short driveshaft between the pickup's original transfer case to the added transfer case rear drive flange / yoke to drive the whole tandem axle affair.
