60 gas issue

I have a 1953 60 that has always ran well. Last 2 Parades we were in it starts to cut out going up a small grade. Gas tank is almost full
fuel line is clean and open, looking into the tank seems clean, sediment bowel is clear. If you pull the choke out just a little it runs fine.
Also runs fine on level ground. I'm thinking maybe some carbon buildup in carb? Starts fine ect. Any suggestions?? Thanks

Could be a carb problem but before you yank it off, - make sure fuel flow is adequate from the tank to the carb. Could fool you, again, and be a bad coil or condenser. Do the easy troubleshooting first.

I appreciate the suggestions, but it only stumbles going up a grade. Thats why I was thinking carb.

I also have a '53 - 60. Many things come up. Mine sits in a heated shop after a refurbish (not total restoration). They are very simple machines, BUT, lots of stuff can put them off. Fuel flow is one, points/condenser/rotor are always under suspicion. All the best. I have had and farmed mine since 1971.

agree with these posts. I just finished up a 70. rebuilt carb and still a bit sluggish. Upon taking apart to paint, found the air inlet hose crimped. After completion plowing this fall was a major improvement!

If you pull the choke out and it runs fine it is an issue with gas/air mixture. Opening the choke would mean your are not getting enough gas, check your load settings. If the tractor does not see much work it is possible the carb has a clogged passage. It may also be as simple as taking a ride down the road a few miles in road gear at full throttle.

When it runs better with the choke pulled out it usually indicates a lean problem in the carb. But sometimes a bad condenser can mimic a lean carb. When the spark is weak the engine needs a richer mixture to fire and pulling out the choke a bit gives it the richer mixture. Going uphill requires more power but a weak spark doesnt have the oomph to light the fire under loaded conditions.
