60 hard to start

I have a 60 and it is almost impossible to start I have changed points and condenser and rebuilt the carburator removing the stainless steel balls to clean all passages and the only way I can get it to start is to dump gas down the intake pipe several times once it fires and run a bit it runs good as long as it don't set to long it will start rite back up. Is it possible the float is set to low as that is the only thing I didn't check after rebuilding the carb. I also run the valves and have 110 psi compression any help would be very much appreciated.

Sounds like the carb still ain't right. Have you checked the cap and rotor. Had problems with same. My 60 starts after 2 Rumpa's. Full choke, 1/2 throttle. Choke on for maybe 5 seconds after start. HTH

If it has the automatic fuel shut off did you push down in the knurled knob above the sediment bowl. Sounds to me like gas is getting away from the float bowl when the engine isn't running.

Next time it sits awhile and won't start unscrew the float bowl drain and see if anything comes out. If there is little or no gas in there you have it narrowed down to a fuel delivery problem. Could be a vacuum leak but if a vacuum leak was so bad as to prevent starting it wouldn't run worth a darn once it's running.

Is your choke working right? Had a 70 once that wouldnt start cold either. Found out the choke shaft was sticking .

Proves to me the choke either isn't closing or the spring is orientated wrong and letting the choke open under suction. A properly closed choke will do the same thing as dumping fuel down it. Once it is running close the choke all the way and see if it floods out and stops. If it doesn't then the choke is not working correctly. Plugs aren't your problem if you can pour fuel down it and it fires up.

I would try the autolite plugs first particularly if you have champion plugs now. Maybe a quick and easy fix.

The choke on a 60 is spring closed- I.E. It will continue running under full choke for a long time- until the plugs foul. The engine sucks the choke plate open against spring pressure.
