60 head removal

Any chance I can remove the head without removing
manifolds? Afraid the manifold bolts are gonna twist off

If you do it correctly, you can get the manifold bolts out just as easily while the head is still on...

But, yes, the head will come out with the manifolds on..just not as easily.

so what is the right way to get manifold bolts out? I have a 60 that needs manifold gaskets replaced.

Lots of heat and squirts of oil, let it set to cool down, repeat about 3 times, and then try to remove them.

Odds are the head will eventually have to come off and have the manifold mating surfaces milled flat. The manifold flange rots out and excaping gasses corrode the adjacent head surface.
There is satisfaction in chucking the head in a mill and drilling those miserable stuck broken bolts out.
It's also a good time to check bore wear, inspect for cracks around the top of the bores , measure valve spring pressure .
A LP manifold fits and doesn't rust out a heat exchanger cross over valve.
A little time and machine work and there is a few extra HP in the head.
iirc mike has a Peratex procedure to eliminate coolant oozing.

gotta agree - do it right and you'll be glad you did.

those bolts/studs can get SO corroded it's scary.

It may be a pain in the butt, but once it's done it's good for another 50 years.
