Having a problem with the 2N and wanted to run some ideas by you for comment.

'46 6v pos ground - after plowing snow for 60 minutes or so, the engine will falter, like running out of gas. A quick pull on the choke will get her to recover RPMs but it will happen again. I assumed it was a spark issue since making the mix richer restores the RPMs. Once when it happened I pulled the fuel bowl off and drained it in case it was water in the fuel. When I restarted, it ran great, for about 5 minutes. Now I am thinking it is something electrical getting hot and in doing so it is limiting the sparks. The time it took to pull the fuel bowl and replace it let it cool down enough to run well again, but whatever part was warm got too warm again.

Coil? Maybe, but if that was the case it would take hours to restart the tractor.

Ignition Switch? Maybe, will have to get a jumper wire put together to test it.

Condensor and Points? Could be as well.

Spark Plugs? I don't know, they start her well so I think they are okay.

So, any thoughts? I think I will start with a jumper wire and go from there.

What do you think?

Ed - you may be right, but I would go for the easy check (other than the switch) of gas. Drain the carb just in case there is some dirt floating around in there or even some water. Then try opening up the main jet 1/4 turn just in case it is running lean. If'n it don't help put it back and go back to your theory.

The front-mounts are noted for getting snow sucked all over the distributor area.

I would certainly be checking this area first. Get yourself a spray bomb for this purpose (moisture removal) - worked for me, but can't recall the name of it off hand. HTH.

Hour is about right for a coil going bad but also the old front mounts don't like to be wet so it could be that your getting the distubutor wet or the coil is going bad. Start it up and run it till it quits and check for spark. If the spark is weak then if you can try a new coil, also look for things being wet. Also before you start it check the spark so you can compare the 2 time you check. Aslo look at the coil and see if it has a black tar looking stuff on it. If it has the black tar looking stuff on the out side your ciol is going south

I fought with My 1950 8n like that for 2 years off and on, it'd run fine for minutes, hours, days whatever then just all of a sudden it would act like it just ran out of gas, even with a full tank. let it sit for a minute or 2 and it would start right back up and run for a while then die again. Found that if I added a gallion or so of gas to the tank, it would clear up and not do it again for several days. Even if the tank was almost full when it died!

Well, eventually one day I was sifoning some gas out for the lawn mower with an old piece of garden hose, and the gas stopped running, i pulled the hose out of the tank, and there was a Full sized, big as your hand MAPLE LEAF stuck on the end of the hose!!

Drained the rest of the tank with the hose and got another one out. 2 full sized maple leafs!! seems they were wrapping around the fuel strainer in the tank cutting off the fuel supply...

Haven't had any problem since..

Take a flashlight and look in the tank just to make shure, Thats the first thing i check any more when it acts up..

it might not hurt to check for the carb iceing up too, look at the intake by the carb and see if its white when the tractor starts to stumble, farm tractors will do this in winter due to the engine being exposed to the open air, instead of enclosed like a vehicle

I had a problem with mine today, almost the same. I added a little bit of gas line antifreze.Worked for me.
How is the ice over to the West? We got about 1/4 inch last night, more on the way.

I will try that - my problem is my 2N has a home made tank with 1.25" plumbing fitting as a cap - kinda hard to see in there

I remember my first year plowing and that happened - she sputtered like crazy - popped the coil off and dried it with a hair dryer - started right back up

It is your coil breaking down and melting inside. Replace it and your problems should stop.
