Hello all

The front lower seal of my power steering is leaking to
the point it HAS to be fixed.

So

1. Can this be replaced without pulling the pedestal?

I assume NO.

2. Is there a COMPLETE gasket seal kit for this project ?

3. Any traps or tricky spots I need to be aware of

4. Has there been a detailed rebuild posted on here that I
could refer too

5. Thank you for any help in this repair

It is appreciated

First and foremost you're gonna need the SM 2016 service manual. Might also need SM 2050 which is for a later power steering unit in case yours has the updated steering actuator.

I'm assuming yours is either leaking out of the bottom steering shaft o-ring or around the steering vane housing which is bolted to the pedestal. Either one of these the pedestal has to come off.

Plan on doing all new seals and gaskets while it's apart. I don't know of any kit for these. When I did my 620 3 years ago JD still had all the gaskets available. At that time I think it was around $200 for all the seals and gaskets and oil (I also had a broken vane pin).

Tips and tricks:
With the pedestal and steering vane housing mark the orientation with a center punch. Also mark the steering gear on top of the shaft with a center punch. When reinstalling the gear put it on 180 deg from where it originally was so you have fresh gear teeth for the worm gear to ride on.
When removing the gear from the shaft you'll probably need heat because I think it's a tapered splined shaft if I remember right. When driving the shaft downward to remove the gear it helps to drive two chisels on each side of the gear to prop it up just a little so the gear rests on the chisels. For whatever reason I couldn't get the gear off until I stuck the chisels under the gear.
Scribe a line across the steering valve housing to the worm gear housing before you remove the valve housing so you get an approximate location when you go back together. That steering valve adjustment is very touchy.
If you take the actuator cams apart do your best to smooth out the wear surface with a die grinder and scotch brite pad. This is one area I gave up on with mine especially because I still have the old style with the actuator screw. I had mine apart a couple of times to try and get the actuator to work properly but no success. Eventually I'll be updating mine to the later style.
You can drive the dowel pins out of the actuator sleeve and turn them 90 deg so they have a new wear surface to ride on.
When you install the vane seals it helps to soak them in warm power steering oil so they're a little easier to work with. Otherwise it's easy to break those vane seals. Also file down any sharp edges on the vanes so the seals don't get cut when installing. Use grease when installing the steering shaft into the pedestal so the o-rings don't get cut.

I'm sure others will chime in with more advise.

I don't know anything about this kit, but if you call him he will help you out. A very nice person to deal with. 844-720-2510

John Deere power steering rebuild kit. This kit is no longer available but included items could be ordered individually or at least they were last time I checked.
