6000 pto speed

learning more and more about my 6000 and have a question about the pto speed. under the frame of the tractor is a lever for 540 off 1000 does just switching that lever actually change from a 540 pto to a 1000? is there a 1000 shaft that one can get to come out the back then? still have to work on the valve body as i can't shut the pto off other then by that lever but dont use pto that much, but gonna mount a loader on this weekend.

Yes. Your S-O-S transmission has gear selectable (engine off) 540/1000 PTO.

There is no PTO brake and it is common for the PTO to turn when turned off due to the oil friction within the clutch pack. You should be able to stop it with your boot or a 2x4 when disengaged when the oil is up to temperature.

If the PTO does not slip and can be stopped when turned off as described above, there is probably no need to adjust the PTO control valve cable.

Yes. there is or was 1000 rpm shaft. Never seen one. There is a gear change built into pto box on back when inserting 1000 pto shaft. There is a pin that has to be moved in box keep from inserting wrong shaft.

that is the pto load power selection lever forward notch selects 2225 engine rpm rear notch 1730 engine rpm to get 1000 pto you have to have the 1000 rpm stub shaft if you have the lever in the rear notch you do not run engine over 1730 rpms if you do it turns the pto faster then 540 rpms my pto turns when there is no load on it

Actually, the lever you are talking about is not a 540 or 1000 RPM selector lever. It allows either 540 or 1000 PTO RPM at 2 different engine speeds depending on which PTO stub shaft you have in. If the 540 shaft is in, moving the lever forward lets the PTO spin at 540 at a higher engine RPM. This is for when full power is needed at the PTO. If the lever is moved to the rear position and the 540 shaft is in, a slower engine RPM is needed to spin at 540. The same is true for the 1000 RPM PTO stub shaft. The stub shafts are driven by different gears and that is what gives you different PTO speeds, not the selector lever.
