6000 transmission question

My dad an I are looking at a 6000 diesel that runs really well but the guy says that is does not move. What is the story on these transmissions and what should we look for? Could we be getting into a pile of headaches? I haven't seen the tractor yet. Any advice would help.
Thanks

The 6000 was the red headed stepchild of ford tractors. It only came with the much maligned SOS tranny, and was a departure of style and design from virtually every other similar line of fords produced.
Gas or diesel available.. and a couple fronts available.. like a wheatland front.. etc..

Since it is SOS, there is a possibility that the traction disconnect at the rear diffy has been thrown so that it can freewhel and be towed.

If you are lucky.. that is it.

From there you need a SOS guru to help you if you are going to get into the adjustment / repair of the unit.

I also 'beieve' there is a torque limiting clutch at the front o fthe tranny that can give out causing total loss of tranny operation.. etc.

If you get this youint, invest in a set of hyd gauges as you will be checking servo pressures... etc.

Good luck... hopefully one o fthe few remaining SOS guru's will be by shortly to rain some enlightenment down upon you..

What does the owner mean when he says it won't move? If there is no hydraulic pressure in the SOS it automatically is in Park regardless of where the shift lever is. That's why Ford installed the traction disconnect- so the tractor can be pulled with a non-running engine. You need to find out if he means the rear wheels are locked up or if he means that the rear wheels are free but the tractor won't move under it's own power.
A properly functioning SOS can be the best transmission you ever used but a broken one can be a money pit.
