601 Ammeter Wiring Help

I'm trying to wire in a new ammeter to my 601. The tank was replaced some time back before I inherited the tractor with a version that didn't have a sending unit. So the fuel level gauge hasn't been used in a long time. I got a new set of gauges and I'm having trouble with the ammeter. It seems that no matter how I try and wire it in that it bypasses the key switch. The tractor will start just fine, but the key doesn't turn the tractor off. Obviously I'm wiring something up incorrectly. When the ammeter is not wired in - key switch works correctly. My question - where do I need to run the wires for the ammeter? I don't want to keep guessing at it. Thanks!

Sounds like the charging system is back feeding the system and supplying power to the coil when running bypassing the key.

Look at the starter solenoid.
On the right side is a large wire coming from the battery.
There should be other wires on this same post.
One might go to the key.
One might go to the charging system.
Depends on how they have the tractor wired.

Take every wire off this solenoid post except for the large wire coming from the battery.
Now wire the amp gauge is series (between) the wires you took off and this large post on the solenoid that still has the large wire coming from the battery.
You need to use 10 gauge wire to wire the amp gauge in as all power going into or out of the battery except for the starter goes through the amp gauge.
If the gauge reads backwards just swap the wires on the back of the amp gauge to get the power going through the gauge in the right direction.

For what it is worth.
I do not like amp gauges on these tractors.
The power draw and in turn the charging amount is so small on these tractors it is very hard to see on an amp gauge.
So you do not notice it when the system is not charging.
A battery volt gauge gets wired different and works different so it is easy to notice when something is wrong.

Thanks for the help. I found this image today. I don't know why I didn't see it earlier when I was looking for wiring diagrams. It looks pretty straight forward. Do you see any errors in it? I'm pretty handy with electrical stuff, but not too familiar with the 6V positive ground systems. Although the theories are basically the same, just opposite!
