601-D Injection Pump Problem..?

Well, after reading a good many posts here and elsewhere, watching several videos, and going through the service manual for my pump, I decided to tear it down to replace all the leaking seals. The tractor was running fine, it just leaked more fuel than it was burning.

The injection pump is a Roosa Master DBGVCC429-1AJ. After reinstalling the pump and bleeding the fuel/air out at the injectors, the tractor started but is blowing out BLACK SMOKE to no end. It idles, but once the throttle is moved, the smoking begins and it has limited power/RPM.

The seal kit fixed the leaks I had, but now I have two new ones: one on the end housing and one around the automatic advance housing (the seal kit didn't include new seals for it.)

I can take care of the leaks, but haven't figured out what happened during the rebuid that has brought on the smoking.

The only thing I can think of is that I MAY have accidentally installed the ball bearing/spring for the automatic advance on the wrong side of the housing...of course that would mean that the pistons/spring are on the wrong sides too..?

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

That would be the first think I'd check, had one of those pumps rebuilt several years ago and the rebuilder installed the advance backwards, run like your saying, took a while to figure that one out

Thanks, I'll reverse the advance tomorrow and see if that takes care of the smoke...then I'll have to find a source for the new seals...oval
'o-rings' don't seem to be in NAPA's inventory

E-mail me your address, I have extra of the bolt on advance block seals you need. The POWER piston must be on the CC side of the block, the SPRING side piston on the C block side as pump turns counter-clockwise.

Black smoke is usually caused by too far advanced. Retard it some and see if that clears it up

As others have mentioned, that would be my first guess, as well.

Rich is the man!

After receiving the new seals and going back through the transfer pump (Plug was leaking) and getting the automatic advance set up correctly, the tractor is running great and with NO LEAKS!

I would post some pics and a video, but the limits here are way too small

Glad you got it going and thanks for posting back, many never follow up once the problem is fixed.
