I recently purchased this tractor and don t know for sure what model it is. The 3 digit casting stamp is either 641 or 841 but I can t tell for sure what the first digit is. Can you guys tell which one it is from the pictures.

I think I attached some pictures. I guess we ll find out if I did that right.

The 600 Series used the 134 CID Engine; the 800 Series introduced the 172 CID engine. '01 Series were different than the prior '00 Series. If your dash has no AMMETER and
just a idiot dash charge lamp, it is the '01. '01 Series all had Power Steering as well. The 601 & 801 Owner's Manual covers both. You need it and a copy of the I&T FO-
20 Service Manual too.

About the biggest difference between the 601 and 801 is the engine. 801 has about 1/2 larger bore a, stronger rear end and a larger fuel tank. The easiest way if you cannot read the stamped numbers may be the fuel tank capacity. This is page 58-59 in your owners manual.

I'm seeing a 601 smaller rear axle housing as it looks like the top link mount is not sunken into the top of the housing as it would for the 801 series, and the drawbar hanger also appears to be the smaller 601 series. The front grille appears as the 601 style and not the 801 eggcrate style, but the dash guage panel is from an 801 series that sits higher up and the hole for the steering column is in a different location on the 601 series that would sit lower and leave more steering column showing. If you can find your engine casting number, that would at least tell you what size engine you have in your tractor. Here are the casting numbers for each size engine. The 144 cubic inch engine was only used for the 601 series diesel engine.

You may have parts from more than one tractor but appears most likely to be a 641 with the hood moved to the upper mounting holes like the 841. Fenders appear to be 8n or NAA/Jubilee.

I think that is 840. It has the wrong grille on it to be 801 series. Fenders are from a N series tractor and it has short steering shaft
under the steering wheel. Actually has the same steering sector box just the hood is mounted higher to make room for a bigger fuel tank.

I'm seeing a 641. It has 601 series grill, fuel gauge and charge light on the dash. I'm surprised to see it's a diesel. The fenders are wrong for an 01
series.

Thanks for the help guys. It went cheap at an auction and probably just going to sell it.

It runs really good but smokes and doesn t stop smoking when warm. It was way overfull on oil and air filter was overfull of water/oil mixture. Maybe if I m lucky one of those 2 things is the reason it smoked.

If the oillevel is high, it may be leaking fuel into the oil - either past the umbrella seals on the injection pump, or from the return line under the valve cover.

How do you find out what year my 601 tractor is?
Look for a horizontal flat pad above the starter. It will have the model number stamped there, and below the model number will be the serial number. The resources tab on this very website shows the info below that I took a screenshot of.

I remember that the rear bell housings are larger on the 800/4000 series tractors and contain 1 or more extra bolts.....I don't remember the bolt count...maybe somebody will pick up on this and give you a correct number.

The heavier duty 8xx series rear axle center housing has a concave surface where the top link rocker attaches, so that the 3 point lift geometry will be the same on the 8xx models as on the 6xx models. I do not see the concave area where the top link is mounted in his pictures, so that rear axle is from a 6xx series tractor.
