601 Transmission oil

That depends on your usage and climate. If you will not be using it a lot and you are in an area where your air tends get humid, you are best off with the originally recommended gear oil. If you are going to work it hard weekly you can do as most do now and use a UTF , or universal tractor fluid that you would also use in the hydraulics and in the rear axle. The modern oils have additives which result in accumulation of moisture due to condensation which will build up and be bad for bearings when usage is only occasional.

showcrop is making assumptions about your tractor. He, and the rest of us, need to know what transmission we're talking about. If it's gear ( 4 or 5 spd) he's likely correct. If it's an SOS (10 spd) he's not even close.

My mistake, it's a 4 speed with reverse. I can go by the manual but things and oil has changed in 60 some years.

The book probably went with GL1 90w but a good transdraulic oil that you use the hydraulics stops cross mixing if a seal leaks between the trans and the hydraulics.
