601 workmaster engine

[MOUNTAINEER]

The engine on my 601 makes a pop--sorta backfire noise-- it goes run run run pop run run run pop-- I think I have an exhaust valve malfunction-- Starts fine-- idles down good--of course a bit short on power-- original 6 volt system-- can I check the valves operation by removing the side engine cover or do I have to remove the top valve cover??
