606 OIL light

Hey guys! So how does the OIL light in the dash work? After swapping the 301 engine into the 606, the OIL light is not working. I'm not sure if it worked beforehand or not. Engine has 40psi oil pressure at idle according to the mechanical gauge. Is there a way to test the sensor switch? Bulb is not burned out.

take the wire off at the switch and ground with the key on it to see if the light comes on. if it does not there is a trace it back to see where you loose voltage. i am not sure of the psi for the switch but would guess 6-10 psi range. once the pressure drops below that it completes the ground to turn the bulb on.

So the light should be getting 12v power from one wire, and the wire
from the switch is a ground?

That should be correct.Did you use the sender from the original engine?Mark

Yes I used the one from the original engine as that's all I had; but I don't know if it worked beforehand or not.

You also may consider installing an aftermarket gauge in conjunction with the oil light.If you have a multimeter,the terminal on the sender should have continuity to its base when engine is off,or even with sender removed.With the key on,ground the sender wire,and the light should come on.Let us know when you get the light working.Mark

Will let you know what I find when I can get back to it. Already have a T-fitting in the block with a mechanical gauge ran up to the dash along with the idiot light.
