6080 Allis Chalmers starter problem.

I have a 6080 Allis Chalmers. The starter engages in the auxillary position and will not disengage unless the switch is turned to the off position. Put a new ignition switch on still have the problem. Put a new wire from the switch to the solenoid and still have the same problem. What am I overlooking.

Is the engine starting? If not and it has a Delco starter, the starter drive retaining lock ring and keeper have broken and came out of place. This lets the starter drive come to far off the armature shaft. The drive is on twisted splines that force it to engage and the mechanical connection back to the solenoid contacts holds the contacts closed.
Edit: Reading closer my above reply may not be on point. Did it start doing this out of the blue or was other electrical work done prior to this problem?

You're saying the wire to engage the starter has been replaced with a wire straight from the start terminal on the (new) key switch. This is the only wire on the starter. (not counting the battery cable) All normally active safety switches and starter interrupts are effectively bypassed. The starter engages and cranks the engine when the switch is in accessory? (and possibly other positions as well?) If so, I don't see any snap ring being involved.

Must have read it before I added the edit. He hasn’t answered yet but sounds to me like some creative wiring may possibly be involved.

6000 series used a Nippondenso gear reduction starter.

This problem just started without any rewiring. As the tractor is running the starter never disengauges. There is only one wire from the starter other than the battery wire. The activation wire originally runs from the switch to the solenoid. I replaced the switch and ran a new wire from the switch to the solenoid. This didn't fix the problem. Before it started engaging the starter full time it was periodically engaging and disengaging the starter while it was running. I had the starter rebuilt a year ago and I wonder if something could have gone wrong in the starter.

It doesn't seem all that complicated. There is only one wire. If you suspect a starter problem then remove that wire. Crank (or start) the engine with a jumper wire. If the starter is the problem, the condition will still be there. I rather doubt it, but it could be. I think chances are better that you have a short in the wiring somewhere.

I would say that something is shorting inside the starter solenoid. The only thing that would prove the solenoid/starter to be the problem for sure would be to start the tractor and disconnect the wire you added/replaced from the switch to the solenoid to see if it still does it. If it does the problem has to be internal to the solenoid/starter.
