620 Starter

I needed to push some snow this week. Went to start the 620 and it wasn't cooperating. Battery was fully charged but the starter seemed to be dragging. Wouldn't start, so I shut the switch off and sat a bit. Hit the starter again and it turned over like crazy. Realized the switch wasn't on, so turned it on while cranking and as soon as the switch was on, the starter would barely turn it over again. Doesn't make sense to me. Does the ignition pull that much juice? Would like to know if this is normal or if something is amiss. Thanks.

how long did the battery turn the starter over like crazy? could still be the battery. Try cranking it again with switch off and see how long the battery holds up.

My 630 certainly never cranks very fast..and I guess that is normal..

I usually get the feeling it cranks not a whole lot faster than Hand-Cranking...

Can't imagine what would make it "Crank like crazy"..

If the Temps are below 10 degrees very long, I must warm the engine block or it will only turn over about 6 times and Stop..(just TOO stiff).

Ron.

If it was spinning like crazy, why didn't it fire up when the switch came on????? If it is firing against the starter, get the timing set or free up the advance weights in the dist.

Thanks for the replies. A little more info. With engine running at 695 rpm, no timing marks visible. Not sure what it should be at 695 rpm anyway. Still running at 695 rpm, with my timing light on plug 1 (flywheel side), I advance the timing on the light. With the timing light at 19 deg advanced, the 20 btdc shows in the hole. With timing light at 24, the 15 btdc shows. Timing light at 29, the 10 btdc shows and with the timing light at 39, the No1TDC shows. Seems backwards to me, but I am no ignition expert.

Next, I run the engine at 1125 rpm and you should see the 20 btdc mark in the hole (per IT manual). No marks were visible.

Nothing has been changed on this tractor since I got it 12 years ago. It runs great, but something must be wrong. Thanks again.

Pulled the distributor. From what I can tell, the initial timing was off. Also, the upper and lower distributor shafts were stuck together. Weights were free. Got the shafts loose so now they turn separately, but think I should pull them apart, clean and lube. Can't find new tabbed locking washers. Are the originals reusable (rebendable)?
